The Global Collaborative Project

Lesson planning for something that involves others can be either exciting or stressful, depending on the process. The following tips may come in handy in order to make this a smoother experience.

•Find your passion and your purpose: Finding the sweet spot of where to start allows you to become focused on the project’s success and gives you more courage to push through any obstacles that may present themselves. For example, I have found that my students dive into deeper global collaboration a few months into the year after we have first created a sense of community in our own classroom.

•Find your people: If you are not connected to educators outside your school or district, now is a great time to become a connected educator, which in its truest form means to connect with others in a purposeful manner to better the way you teach. This can be done through connections you make both globally and locally.

•Let go (a little): There are bound to be things that do not go according to plan and projects that do not turn out the way you expected. That happens a lot in teaching. So allow a project to veer off the path if you can, and see where it goes. Often the best lessons come in unexpected ways.

Sometimes, educators are so inspired by a global project that they create their own. This is exactly what Kerri Thompson, a teacher from New Zealand, did after she participated in the Global Read Aloud. Here, she shares her story of how she used the idea of a preexisting project to create what has since become a multinational project:

The concept of connecting learners through one book, after experiencing the Global Read Aloud, had me thinking about our own authors in New Zealand and the possibility of initiating a collaborative project, which had a New Zealand focus. What an exciting prospect, connecting Kiwi kids through a book written by a New Zealand author with a New Zealand setting about New Zealand kids! And so the project was born—#NZreadaloud—One Book to Connect Kiwi Kids. (You may visit the blog at https://newzealandreadaloud.wordpress.com for more information about this journey.)

#NZreadaloud completed its third term [in 2016], having connected fifty-four teachers and approximately sixteen hundred learners this time around. The impact on learning has been exciting. Many teachers have emailed to inform me how much more enthused their reluctant readers are to engage in a book. (K. Thompson, personal communication, September 15, 2015)

Creating your own global collaborative project does not mean that your idea has to be unique; it means that you create a project that works for you. Find inspiration in what already exists, and then take the step toward creating something just for your students. By allowing yourself to be inspired, you will, in turn, be able to create unique learning opportunities that further student engagement in your literacy environment.
